A desert basilisk is a reptilian monster that instead of petrifying creatures with a gaze it transforms them into a Fire Elemental with its gaze - which it then will attempt to devour. A desert basilisk usually has a sand colored body with a brown and yellow striated underbelly. Some specimens sport a short, curved horn atop the nose. An adult basilisk’s body grows to about 6 feet long, not including its tail, which can reach an additional length of 5 to 7 feet. The creature weighs about 300 pounds.

Combat

A basilisk relies on its gaze attack, biting only when opponents come within reach. Though it generally moves very slow, it has eight legs and its high metabolism allows it impressive bursts of speed - up to 80ft for one round. Also in contrast to the normal variety of basilisk, this creature is a social animal and hunts prey in packs of 8-20. :) Their hunting tactics can be quite crafty - two basilisks will attempt to chase or lure prey into an ambush by the rest of the pack. Their bite does tripple damage to Fire Elementals and any fire elemental biten by a desert basilisk must make a fortitude save DC equall to its gaze attack or be consumed instantly.

Transforming  Gaze (Su)

Turn to fire permanently, range 60 feet; Fortitude DC 13 negates. The save DC is Charisma-based. Character retains hit points, feats, and mental stats. They gain the Fire subtype although thy are not considered extraplanar (unless they were to begin with). They also gain immunity to fire and vulnerability to cold and their AC and move becomes that of a fire elemental of similar HD. They do lose teh ability to grasp things, and have no control over what they burn etc.

Skills

*The basilisk’s dull coloration and its ability to remain motionless for long periods of time grant it a +4 racial bonus on Hide checks in natural settings.

Combat

The save DC for the abyssal greater basilisk’s petrifying gaze (DC 21) is adjusted for its greater Hit Dice and higher Charisma score.

An abyssal greater basilisk’s natural weapons are treated as magic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

Smite Good (Su)

Once per day an abyssal greater basilisk can make a normal melee attack to deal an extra 18 points of damage against a good foe.
